NoteBook User Profile – Law Student

1. What is your name and occupation?

My name is Josanne Pont-van Westrienen, and I’m a second year law student, studying at home via the Open Universiteit Nederland.

2. Please describe a typical day at school.

I don’t have any classes to go to; everything is done at home through the Internet. Taking notes is obviously different in my situation compared to note taking in a lecture. Basically, I open up my textbook and a workbook (which is a reference for the textbook that includes extra explanation, examples, questions, etc.) and I make notes while reading/studying.

3. How does NoteBook fit into your workflow?

Since I am a law student, case briefs are quite important. I have a Notebook set up for each course I’m taking (e.g. criminal law, Constitutional law, tort law, etc.). In those Notebooks I have a section with notes from the textbook, a section with notes from the workbook, a section with case briefs and a section with questions that I have regarding the subject matter.

I have a separate Notebook with brief cases only, divided by subject (very convenient when I need a criminal law case for tort law, for example).

In my “legal writing” Notebook are templates and examples for different kinds of legal texts (essay, pleading notes, notices, different types of letters…), common texts that are used a lot, building plans for different types of texts, roadmaps for solving cases, well, anything that comes in handy when writing anything law-based.

On top of that I have a personal Notebook set up, where I can put in everthing that crosses my mind which is non-study-related.

4. How has NoteBook boosted your performance as a student?

It has helped me organize my notes tremendously. When I need information I know exactly where to find it, which saves a lot of time! I try to write down the same kind of notes in the same template, so that with just looking at a page with notes, I know what kind of information it is.

The writing Notebook and the one with all the brief cases are synced with my iPad, so I can take them with me everywhere.

5. What are your favorite NoteBook features?

Syncing, sections, different kinds of pages (to do, notes, outline…), Sticky notes that can be put anywhere on a page, PDF-import…. And how could I forget the Multidex! A true life saver!

6. Do you use NoteBook with any other apps?

NoteBook was actually the first non-Apple app I bought after getting a Mac and I have no regrets! Before I got my Mac I was living in Microsoft OneNote and I desperately needed a replacement for it. After searching Google I found NoteBook and it was love at first sight.

7. How would you describe NoteBook in one sentence?

Indispensable for an organized life!
